We had two teams of men in Cornwall last week for that club’s annual bonspiel. It’s a one game affair, and after the match, the winning team members each throw a rock to the rings, with points awarded for accuracy. This determines the overall winner in the twenty-four team competition. Pete Zeran, Jack Barkley, Larry Ware and Earl Jeacle were tied after seven ends, but lost on the last rock against a Quebec team. Sid Morrell, Neil Williams, Andy Patenaude and Bud Perry defeated Pointe Claire, but couldn’t earn enough points in their draws to the button to be the overall winners.

The first draw for the senior men finished last week and Sid Morrell, Neil Williams, Larry Ware and Rick Astley were victorious. Play has now begun for the Bowman Trophy.

Three of our ladies’ teams were also in Cornwall last week. They found the ice fast but also slippery, and a few of our ladies were injured. Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg, Paula and Claire Locke defeated their morning opponent, and in their afternoon match Kathy Norg skipped and they played with three, winning that game also. Alice Thompson, Betty Locke, Sharon Van Allen and Linda Murphy lost to Hawkesbury, and after lunch lost to a team from Quebec. In order to turn more of their profits back to the club, some organizers have prizes for the top couple of teams, but have visiting teams select one of their number to come up for a prize. Linda Murphy, the team representative again, won another bottle of wine. Gretta McGann, Joan McKinnon, Kathy Killick and Penny Charlebois lost to the same Quebec team that Alice played, but in the afternoon they defeated Hawkesbury, as Gretta broke the tie with a draw to the button. Gretta also won the 50/50 draw that day.

Then on Wednesday, two of our teams were in Richmond for lunch, dinner, and some curling. Kathy Norg, Kathy Killick, Joanne Baker and Claire Locke defeated Cornwall in the morning. In the afternoon, they won over a team from Navy, but lost the overall title to a team from Carleton Place. Our other foursome, Alice Thompson, Betty Locke, Yvonne Mabo and Sharon Van Allen dropped a tight game to Navy, and after a very nice lunch, defeated a Huntley team. After the evening meal and the awarding of prizes, the ladies got home safely in the dark and stormy night. They found it a long day, but made it to the prize table. and were back at another bonspiel in Lancaster yesterday.

We also have Glenn Cougler’s stick bonspiel this week, and Alice Thompson reports that she has twelve teams confirmed for her ladies invitational bonspiel on December first. The senior men are hosting the first of the Parnell competitions next Friday against teams from Prescott, Cornwall and Lancaster. Finally, we have two ladies teams competing in the four club Gamble competition in Metcalfe this Saturday. Russell and Winchester teams round out the field in the full day event. Maybe our folks will bring home the “A” and “B” division trophies. Good luck!

As of Monday we still needed four more curlers for the Gamble this Saturday. No additional senior men can play, as they have heavy time commitments just now. Please let Mahlon Locke know if you are able to curl that day.

That’s it for now. Good curling to all!
