In our recent stick bonspiel, Mahlon Locke, Mike Lemaire, Chuck Irvine and Kent Dawley defeated Prescott to tie Russell for the most points. The tie had to be broken, so looking at ends won, Russell had one more and got their names on the trophy. Sorry fellows, you played well. Too bad they couldn’t have squeezed both teams’ names on the shield. Sorry about misreading my scribbled notes from that day.

Last Wednesday, three Prescott teams paid a return visit to our club for a senior men’s friendly bonspiel. Andy Patenaude, Ron Brinston, Kent Dawley and Hans Verbruggen won their match, as did Peter Zeran, Al

Harriman, Lynn Loucks and Jim Adams. John Allison, Earl Jeacle and Kent Dawley were more kind to our guests. After a tasty lunch and the usual mutual congratulations and anecdotes, we bade our visitors adieu and went home for a much-needed rest. On Wednesday, our Cornwall adversaries make their return visit for another friendly ‘spiel.

Also on Wednesday, Jack Barkley took his team to Metcalfe for their bonspiel. He reports that his team finished in second place for each of their matches (against strong Ottawa teams)     Last Tuesday, Alice Thompson and her committee held their annual women’s invitational bonspiel. Kilpatrick’s Brockville team took top honours in the early draw, with North Grenville and Alexandria tied for second. We were unable to break the tie, so each second-place team won the prize money. Morrisburg’s Joan MacKinnon, Kathy Killick, Nelda Hickman and Linda Murphy won the late draw, while Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg and Paula and Claire Locke finished second.

We were treated to some top notch curling on the day, but many of the teams, in their closing remarks, mentioned that the home-cooked meals (donated by our ladies), were the main reason for their annual  return. Our thanks to them, and to those who helped at the bar, in the kitchen, and assisting Wally Baker, our ice technician. Wally also helped throughout the day in numerous other ways.

On Saturday, our Christmas bonspiel featured two six-end matches in the morning, with soup and rolls for lunch, before our curlers headed back onto the ice. After a tasty pot luck supper, several announcements were made by President Mahlon before the prizes were handed out. In the early draw, Jack Barkley, Alice Thompson, Ron Brinston and Glenn Cougler beat Wally Baker and Andy Patenaude. In the late  draw, Pete Zeran, Kathy Killick, Kelly Friedrich and Bill Simmons won out over John Toonders’ squad and Neil Williams’ foursome.

In other news, Betty Locke won the 50/50 draw, and Raymond Benoit won the Ottawa Senators’ game day tickets.      Special thanks to Mahlon and Paula and all the others who helped make this such a pleasant and successful event.
