Our Thursday morning curlers held their “friendly” last Wednesday, hosting three teams from Russell for their return visit. Our curlers were Greta McGann, Al Harriman, Betty Locke and Denis Thibault and Andy Patenaude, Joan McKinnon, Jim Casselman and Jacques Marquis, and Susan McIntosh, Earl Jeacle, Keith Robinson and John Gove. Our folks weren’t too friendly on the ice, winning every game, in spite of the fact that Sharon Van Allen had to find a couple of spares, but Keith and Linda Robinson made some hot soup, and others brought in sandwiches and desserts, so our visitors went home happy, with visions of Sharon’s St. Patrick’s Day decorations dancing in their heads.

On the same day, four of our ladies were in Alexandria for their annual bonspiel. Alice Thompson, Penny Charlebois, Linda Murphy and Nelda Hickman lost to Vankleek Hill, and on the last rock in the second match, in an upset, to Cornwall, but they enjoyed the event and the hospitality.

Thursday saw two teams of ladies in Winchester for their annual Grandmother’s Bonspiel. Alice Thompson, Janie Connelly, Nelda Hickman, and Kathy Gunhill were in the early draw, playing Russell and Navy. They came close, but lost both games.

Susan McIntosh took Kathy Norg and Paula and Claire Locke with her. They played teams from Kemptville, to whom they lost by a single point, followed by a loss to Metcalfe in the afternoon.

Lunch and dinner were served in style, the usual “grandmother” queries and anecdotes were exchanged, and the teams read out limericks they had to create, bawdy or otherwise, before they headed home to their various clubs with their mementoes, recalling the good day had by all.

Friday saw Dave King, Greta McGann, Fred “Boomer” Langlotz and Joan McKillick, as well as Andy Patenaude, Linda Murphy, Keith Robinson and Penny Charlebois in Kemptville for their annual 222 bonspiel. Dave’s team dropped their first match against the Stacey team from Navan, who won the overall title, and won their second game against the other Navan foursome. Andy Patenaude’s team won their first game against a team skipped by Rideau’s Smith, but lost their second against Lynne Stacey’s quartet from Navan. The team felt they had that game won with a lead in the second-last end, but bad luck prevailed and they lost the championship with the last rock. Curling can be a cruel game. Sounds like a great day anyway.Z

There will be a closing bonspiel for the club on April 2nd, and games will be played then to determine the senior men’s and the Thursday Night champions.

We’ll have the results for the Thursday morning mixed league and the Tuesday night men’s league next time. The other leagues don’t declare winners, so that column will be it for this season, unless we hear of any late bonspiel results.
