A Giving Spirit
The Ladies' Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening leagues traditionally have a pre-
Christmas potluck and gift exchange, but opted for a different activity this year to celebrate the season. The leagues joined forces for a good cause, collecting much needed supplies and funds for the Naomi Family Resource Centre located in Winchester, serving the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry counties.Â
Rowan’s Law was named for Rowan Stringer, a high school rugby player from Ottawa, who died in the spring of 2013 from a condition known as second impact syndrome (swelling of the brain caused by a subsequent injury that occurred before a previous injury healed). Rowan is believed to have experienced three concussions over six days while playing rugby. She had a concussion but didn’t know her brain needed time to heal. Neither did her parents, teachers or coaches.
Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day were established to honour her memory and bring awareness to concussions and concussion safety.
The last Wednesday of each September has been designated as Rowan’s Law Day to help raise awareness about concussion safety.
Please join us in remembering Rowan Stringer by promoting concussion safety through a tweet, Facebook or Instagram post.
Show your support for #RowansLawDay by sharing your stories and learning the signs and symptoms of a concussion.
Morrisburg Curling Club fully agrees with the position and policies of Curl Ontario covered in the statement below:
The health and well-being of our sporting athletes is very important to CurlON, along with all of the Curling clubs and facilities in Ontario for the continued vibrancy and longevity of this great sport. Understanding the lasting effects of concussions and potential ramifications of early return to play is essential for all athletes, coaches, organizers, administrators and Boards and is a critical first step to embracing and ensuring that the established protocols are to be followed. The sport of curling in Ontario has already implemented many of the requirements in the Bill and I can assure you that we will endeavour to update our operating policies/standards to assure full compliance with Bill 193.
These policies and protocols will include:
CurlON will continue to encourage all involved in sport to be aware of this important legislation and begin the process of adopting the policies and protocols, as they pertain to concussions and return to play for athletes.
