Last Tuesday our Morrisburg women hosted their annual bonspiel. In the early draw, Russell’s #2 team, Raja Wysocki, Sharon Courneyea, Patsy Waddell and Hazel MacDougall topped the charts, defeating Virginia Cunningham from North Grenville before lunch, and afterwards, Navan’s Lynne Stacey, both former champions. In the late draw, Rita Kilpatrick, Cindy Dalgleish, Annie Allan and Ann MacDonald from Brockville were tops, defeating Prescott’s Sheila Bush in the morning and Lisette Ladurautaye from Hawkesbury in the afternoon. Everyone raved about the ice and the meals. Former, thanks are due to Wally Baker, who also helped with the dishes and got a balky stove working for the ladies. As to the food, our local women deserve full credit for preparing food for the hungry curlers. The meals and the atmosphere bring the curlers back each year. Organizer Alice Thompson praised the kitchen staff, the bartenders, those who helped Wally with the ice, and everyone else involved. It was another hugely successful day for our local club.

Recently Sid Morrell, Andy Patenaude, Keith Robinson and Bud Perry competed in Navan’s senior men’s bonspiel. As usual, it was games in the morning and afternoon, punctuated at noon by a tasty lunch. Our fellows defeated teams from Navan in the morning and Carleton Heights in the afternoon, finishing second overall. Well done, fellows. Now if you had only played weaker teams, you would have finished first. Planning!

A little while ago, three of our teams were in Cornwall for a friendly bonspiel. Dave King, Paul Dobry, Sam Locke and Kent Dawley, and Peter Zeran, Moe Kolff, Earl Jeacle and Hans Verbruggen, as well as Andy Patenaude, Bill Magee, Len bwellamy and Paul Gunther weren’t too sure it was truly a “friendly” bonspiel, since Cornwall defeated each of our teams. Still, the lunch afterwards was good, and the fellows left for home, licking their wounds.

Last week our senior men hosted three teams from Prescott. Sid Morrell, Keith Robinson, Fred “Boomer” Langlotz and Lynn Loucks, as well as Don McMillan, Doug Jarvis, Eric Johnson and Ron Brinston, and Don O’Brien, Al Harriman, Arnold Barkley and Mahlon Locke. They were all good hosts and permitted the visitors a pleasant morning, fed them well at lunch time and sent them home, with silent vows to curl better when they made the return trip to Prescott.

Friday saw two of our men’s teams in Prescott for their bonspiel. Don McMillan, Keith Robinson, Fred “Boomer” Langlotz and Paul Gunther defeated Granite in the morning and after lunch tussled with a Navy foursome, falling to them in another tight game. Peter Zeran, Maurice Kolff, Bud Perry and Earl Jeacle beat Navy in the morning and Granite in the afternoon, finishing first in the bonspiel, with Don’s team third. A great day, fellows!

Saturday, Greta McGann, Joan McKinnon, Kathy Killick and Linda Murphy played in the Women’s Curling Association Challenge, held in Metcalfe. They won their first game against Navy. They played in the “A” division in the afternoon against Granite and curled well, but couldn’t overcome a 6-5 deficit in the final end. This eliminated them from further play, and the “A” and “B” division winners played off last Sunday for the division titles.

That’s it for now. Good curling to all!
