The first Parnell competition of the season was held in Morrisburg last Friday. On Tuesday, two men’s teams played off to select our champion for the bonspiel. Peter Zeran, Mahlon Locke, Earl eacle and Sam Locke defeated Sid Morrell, Don McMillan, Neil Williams and Bud Perry for that honour. On Friday, Peter’s team beat the Prescott 1 foursome in the morning. After lunch they returned to the ice and defeated one of the Cornwall teams by three points. Unfortunately the other Cornwall quartet won their second match as well, and when ends won were totalled, Cornwall took the Parnell by one point. Lancaster was tied with our local reps. Well done anyway, fellows. It was a well-run competition as always, and our thanks to all of the volunteers.

On Saturday our club hosted the “Snowflake Bonspiel”. Four young teams from Cornwall competed in the early draw, many of them first-time curlers. It was a delight watching them learn about the game, and they made some good shots. Austin Gibeault, Karine Pantine and Jenny Molette won both games, and while they didn’t have quite enough points to be the overall winners on the day, we salute them for their efforts and their support of the United Way bonspiel. Sherry Davis, who skipped one of the other teams, spoke to the curlers about the work the United Way does for S.D. and G. and Cornwall, and thanked everyone for participating. The silent auction and sales of attractive items earned extra money for the cause and the lunch was enjoyed by all. We hope the United Way folks will arrange for another bonspiel here next year.

For the late draw, we had six local teams entered, the competition was keen and there were many high-quality shots. Two teams had perfect days and total points and ends had to be used to break the tie. Wendy and Jim Casselman, Daryl McDonell and Lise Locke-Dickey were victorious, with Mahlon Locke, Carolyn and Garry Beckstead and Larry Gallinger a close second. As always, the ice was great and the volunteers worked hard to make the event run smoothly.

Our Women’s Invitational bonspiel runs all day Tuesday, and we’ll have the report on that next time. Also, members are reminded of the Christmas bonspiel at the club for December 12 and the banquet that follows.

Finally, Sunday saw our club hosting the annual sponsors’ bonspiel. It’s a way of thanking those who pay for the signs above our ice sheets, and we are most grateful for their support. Six groups agreed to take to the ice for this event. In the morning, Morrisburg Building Centre won out over Bristers, Morrisburg Plumbing #1 defeated Upper Canada Motor Sales, and Morrisburg Plumbing #2 beat Home Hardware/Veinotte. After a very good lunch, everyone returned to the ice, and Morrisburg Plumbing #1 defeated Morrisburg Plumbing #2. Bristers beat the Home Hardware/Veinotte foursome, while Upper Canada Motor Sales defeated the Morrisburg Building Centre. After M.C. Jack Barkley checked the scores, he announced that Bristers Insurance had eked out a win for the day. Their team will have their names inscribed on the new trophy, and Bristers will have it in their office, at least until next time. Jack invited the other sponsors to try to wrest it from their hands at the next bonspiel. Some great curling, folks!  Numerous volunteers assisted in providing and serving food, coaching the curlers, and looking after the ice and bar.

That’s it for now. Good curling to all!
