Two teams of our curlers have returned from their first bonspiel. Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg, and Paula and Claire Locke at Ottawa’s R.A Centre, in their first match,  won against Carleton Heights.

After a delicious lunch in the dining room, with several main courses and quite a few choices for dessert, they went back out to the six sheet curling club, and dropped a tight one to a team from the Granite club.

Our other representatives, also curling in the early draw, were Alice Thompson, Betty Locke, Sharon Van Allen and Linda Murphy. Linda won a bottle of some sparkling liquid in a draw after the matches, but that was her team’s sole victory. They had two close games, but lost to Carleton Heights and Granite, the same two clubs Susan McIntosh played. Granite finished second overall, while the Cityview entrant finished first. Well-curled games, folks. Next time you’ll be on the winning side. We have ladies’ teams in the Cornwall and Richmond bonspiels next week, so we’ll watch with interest.

Most of you will remember Kathy Johnston. She’s kept careful watch on our club’s finances as treasurer for many years , and has curled here even longer. Kathy has decided to retire, and we’ll miss her. She’s also a former club president, and was active nationally as well, and reached the vice-presidency of the Canadian Curling Association. All the best, Kathy!

The senior men curl this month in the Parnell in Morrisburg. Each of the four clubs host one match, and this one is ours. Here, our fellows are only allowed one team, so there’ll be a playoff to determine our champion. We also have some senior men off to Navan for a bonspiel, and we’ll report to you on those results.

Sue McIntosh needs two more teams for her 2-person ‘spiel on Sunday. Hope someone can fill the bill. We love watching those matches.

Glenn Cougler is organizing another stick bonspiel. He’s set it for late this month, but Winchester has scheduled one for the same day as well, so somebody will have to make a change. Stay tuned!

We saw some great curling over the week in Truro, Nova Scotia, at the Masters Tournament. They had many of the best teams in the world there, and the champions weren’t decided until late on Sunday. Quite dramatic, especially when Gushoe, the skip of the Newfoundland foursome, lost his balance and crashed face forward to the ice. He was hospitalized and got stitched up before returning to the game. They lost, but it was an exciting game. By the way, the reason we have events like these, which give higher visibility to more teams, and a needed increase in income for many more curlers than the national championships used to permit, with only about ten teams getting national exposure, is a tribute to Kevin Martin, one of the world’s best curlers. He worked for many years to get events like these underway. Curlers and observers owe a great deal to Kevin for his work in this regard. He’s retired from competitive curling now, but he is still active in the sport in numerous ways.

That’s it for now. Good curling to all!
