The Ladies Broder Cup was held in Winchester with two teams representing us: Susan McIntosh, Claire Locke, Heather Black and Nancy Barkley, as well as Kathy Norg, Joan MacKinnon, Kathy Killick and Cindy Paice. Susan’s team lost both of their matches, while Kathy Norg’s foursome took their afternoon match. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch and a spectacular banquet, before the “A” and “B” finalists went out to compete for trophies. In the “A” division, the Winchester team, with our Wendy Casselman, lost their match, while Kathy Norg’s team dropped their game in the “B” final to Herrin from Russell. Well curled, folks!

The third Parnell competition for senior men was in Prescott January 29^th, with defending champ Pete Zeran and his team trying for a repeat. Don McMillan’s foursome  represented us as well. Both of our teams won one match and lost the other and enjoyed a fine lunch, later joining in congratulations to the Prescott curlers, who won this edition of the Parnell competition.

Our local Lions Club hosted a charity bonspiel for the Dundas and Stormont Hospices on Saturday. In the first draw, three teams tied for the lead with 22 points, and Jack Barkley, who steered the day’s events, broke the tie in his usual unusual manner, declaring Carl Robinson and Jamie and Cindy Billings the winners. Second place went to the Iroquois-Matilda Lions, and third place to the Lions team from Finch. In the second draw, the “Tiddley Winks”, Terry Davis, Linda Murphy and John Gove, took first place with 26 points. The Morrisburg Lions were two points behind, while third place was taken by the Maxville Lions with 19 points. Keith and Linda Robinson, as well as Brian Provost, were the main organizers. Dave King mentioned that the rules were somewhat relaxed so that the Lions players, some of whom were not regular curlers, would not be at a disadvantage. By the looks of things, they did very well indeed.

Thanks also to the many volunteers who contributed to the day’s success, in addition to Dave King, the bartenders, those who worked in the kitchen, and the people who looked after the ice. The silent auction was a great money-maker, and added to the day’s receipts made possible a sizeable contribution this year.  Also, we should mention that our local Lions Club donated about $5,000 to provide rocks for our club last year. Lynn Gee from the Dundas County Hospice thanked the local Lions for their generous donation which will help both the Morrisburg and Stormont County Hospices. We are fortunate to have this fine organization in our community.

We have a team of curlers in Prescott for the Robbie Burns event, and we’ll have those results next time.

Finally, Susan McIntosh plans to hold another two-person bonspiel for charity on February 11^th.
