Our juniors were to be in Cornwall last Wednesday, but because of the weather that outing was cancelled. R.O., Holy Trinity, Char Lan, St. Joseph’s St. Lawrence, La Citadelle, Glengarry, North Dundas, as well as Seaway had to begin their competition on Thursday. The Seaway boys had one win. Team members are Griffin Pattersen, Adam and Dean Lapier and Randy Keller. Our mixed team consists of Anneke Gibbon, Adam White, Martina Lewis and Christian Mueller. They dropped both matches on that first day. The next matches are tentatively set for Winchester, depending on ice availability.
In the senior men’s friendly bonspiel in Prescott last week, Mahlon Locke’s vice was Ron Beaupre, replacing “Boomer”. Sorry for the error, Ron.
Final details from the Crystal Heart bonspiel: We missed reporting about another local curler, Wendy Casselman, who was playing with her Winchester team, Janet Lapierre, Janet Thompson and Janet Levere, The Winchester rink did well, but lost to Fletcher from Cityview, and eventually curled in the consolation round against Nicol from Lachine on Sunday morning. They dropped that match and were eliminated from further play. Lachine then lost out in the consolation final. Congratulations folks.
On Saturday, two of our ladies’ teams were in Russell for their all-day invitational bonspiel. Alice Thompson, Greta McGann, Kelly Friedrich and Nelda Hickman were in the early draw. They lost their morning game against Metcalfe, one of the top teams in the Crystal Heart bonspiel. After a tasty lunch, Alice’s team played a quartet from the R.A. This one was a see-saw battle, but R.A, took two in the final end to win. In the late draw, Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg and Paula and Claire Locke dropped their first game against Cornwall, but won their late match against Carleton Heights. It was a good day’s curling.
After dinner a novelty event was put on by several Russell ladies. They were dressed as horses, and raced beside a long table toward the glass, while spectators bet on the ponies. Several of our curlers were able to collect winnings from their wagers.
The banquet was delicious –a roast pork dinner with all the trimmings. As usual, the local men served appropriate beverages to each table. Our ladies later wended their way home for a well-earned rest after another wonderful bonspiel.
Also on Saturday, Iroquois High School hosted a reunion bonspiel involving ten teams at our club. In the early draw, Keith Robinson, Fred “Boomer” Langlois, Scott Robinson and Paul Gunther won both of their matches to take the title.
Susan McIntosh had another successful two-person bonspiel on Sunday. In the “C” final, Perry Cryderman and Scott Robinson triumphed over Derrick Tibben and Mark St. Pierre. In the “B” championship, Al Harriman and Jamie Gilboard defeated John Wilson and Andy Patenaude. The “A” title went to Ian Wilson and Catherine, who won out over Peter Zeran and Bill Simmons. As usual, a great meal was had by all in another of Susan’s fine fund-raisers.
