On Thursday last week, Greta McGann took a team to Prescott for their annual Robbie Burns competition. As usual, the ladies were piped out onto the ice, most of them dressed in kilts. With Greta were Alice Thompson, Janie Connelly, and Gay Lapp. They lost both matches, to Granite and Brockville, the last by only one point, with Kingston the overall champion on the day. The food was ample, tasty, and enjoyed by all, even though no haggis was served.

Friday saw Peter Zeran, Larry Ware, Earl Jeacle and John Gove, as well as Jack Barkley, David King, Doug Jarvis and Rick MacKenzie representing our club in the senior men’s Parnell competition. They won their match against Cornwall, but dropped their games against Lancaster. The results were close, with Lancaster winning the day by a single point, with Morrisburg and Cornwall right behind them.

Also on Friday, three teams of senior men were in Brockville for a friendly bonspiel. Maurice Kolff, Neil Williams, Dave Salmon and Jamie Guilbord, as well as Sam Locke, Jacques Marquis, Bud Perry and “Boomer” Langlois, and Mahlon Locke, Keith Robinson, Arnold Barkley and Paul Gunther. Mahlon’s foursome was the only local team to win, but all enjoyed lunch in the beautiful dining room. Our fellows will host Brockville in the return visit this week.

Last Saturday, Morrisburg, Winchester, and Metcalfe met in Russell for the annual two-team, four-club renewal of the Broder competition. Greta McGann, Kathy Killick, Linda Murphy and Kelly Friedrich defeated Winchester in the morning but lost to Metcalfe in the afternoon. Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg, Leanne McCooeye and Claire Locke dropped their morning match to Metcalfe and were leading against Russell, but lost in the last end. Apparently this was a relief to one team member, who was exhausted after the long day of curling, and didn’t want to return to the ice that evening. All of the ladies enjoyed the competition and two teams from each of Metcalfe and Russell met for the “A” and “B” titles after the annual meeting and the banquet.

In the annual meeting, several housekeeping items were discussed and voted on, and a third-generation descent of the Broder family, from Morrisburg, gave an entertaining speech about the history of the family and of the competition. The banquet followed, with the local ladies, providing a delicious array of main courses and desserts, before the finalists returned to the ice for the playoffs.

President Mahlon Locke announced last week that our local Lions Club has donated sufficient money for the club to order replacement rocks for all three sheets of ice. We thank them for this most generous funding, and especially those Lions who curl here, Fred “Boomer” Langlois, Keith and Scott Robinson, and Paul Gunther. They brought the need for help to the attention of the other Lions. By the way, twenty-five of our members purchased rocks, and others were considering it. We are indebted to our curlers for this, and for the many other ways in which the Lions club has assisted the town of Morrisburg.
