The senior men finished their third draw last week, and the champions were Jack Barkley, Len Bellamy, Chuck Irvine and Ron Brinston. In addition, our Tuesday night men finished their first draw of the season, and the winners were Larry Cooper, Al Harriman, Shawn Lapier and Rick Astley. Congratulations to both of these fine teams.

Last Friday three squads from Brockville were at the club for their return visit to play the senior men. Peter Zeran, Paul Dobry, Bert Smail and Charlie Farlinger, Jack Barkley, Jim Adams, John Gove, and Bud Perry, as well as Keith Robinson, Doug Jarvis, Ron Brinston and Maurice Kolff were our representatives. Morrisburg won all three matches. After a morning game followed by a social hour, the fellows settled down for a tasty lunch before heading to Brockville, or in the case of our fellows, home to a necessary rest after the morning’s hosting, lunch preparation and additional kitchen duties. While we don’t have the dining room that Brockville has, our soup and sandwiches, cheese and pickles and so on, as well as fine desserts, are their equal. Today the fellows are off to Prescott to try their ice for another friendly bonspiel. Retirement is wonderful, isn’t it?

On Saturday our Lions Club hosted a hospice bonspiel here, with a full slate of 12 teams. Actually, they had to turn away several other potential entrants. They could have had a third draw, although this would have meant running a supper as well, as we did in the old “Founder” days. This might have been too much of a load for the hospice and the organizers. Linda Robinson, who looked after finances on the very successful day, reports they had over 50 businesses that helped with sponsorship of this fine bonspiel. A spokeswoman for the Williamsburg Hospice described what the money raised would mean for the work they do for their clients.

As to the results, in the first draw, the winners were Wendy Casselman, with husband Jim, Daryle McDonnell and Liz Locke, followed by Western Wonder, while the third team was from Iroquois High School. The second draw saw Team Help, skipped by Sam Locke, with Bud Perry, Anjo Norg, and Paula/Claire Locke. Second was Team Morrisburg C.C. followed by Greta’s Girls.

It was another great effort by our Lions Club, and we thank them again for this. Everyone had a good time on the ice and in the lounge. Inside they enjoyed bidding on the items donated by sponsors, and the 50/50 draw, to name some. It was a type of event that is becoming more popular for curling clubs, and we thank Jack Barkley and his committee for making this one run so well.
