Last Saturday the club had a special bonspiel to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. Jack Barkley and his committee organized the event and were able to draw competitors from frequent provincial level curlers, the Ottawa Hunt Club, and top regional and local teams. There were some hard-fought matches and some surprises as well. We thank those who helped the event run so smoothly, with special appreciation to Sue and Dave McIntosh, who provided us with an exceptional meal of pulled pork, followed by tasty desserts.

In the early draw, Keith Robinson, “Boomer” Langlois, Scott Robinson and Paul Gunther tied with Jack Barkley’s team, but lost in a tie-breaker. Williamsburg’s John Toonders, with Jim Casey, Don Lazenby and Gary Pemberton tied with Jack and Laura Barkley, Jennifer Whitteker and Jamie Kennedy. They chose not to break the tie and split the prize money for first and second place. It couldn’t have been much closer.

In the late draw, Wendy Casselman’s team The Canadian Rockers, perennial provincial championship competitors, skipped by Janet LaPierre, with Janet Levere and Janet Thompson, won as expected, with the Hunt Club team’s Bob and Sandi Wallace, and Brad and Lynn Solkalski a close second, but a surprise upset by Alice Thompson over Parnell competitor Peter Zeran earned her a third-place finish on the day. Congratulations to Alice Thompson, Al Harriman, Mike Legault and Gay Lapp for a fine bonspiel.

In an earlier event, three teams of our Thursday morning curlers had their return visit to Russell for a friendly bonspiel. Maurice Kolff, Arnold Barkley, Denis Thibault and Gail Lafreniere, as well as Andy Patenaude, Alice Thompson, Jim Casselman and Jamie Guilbord, and Susan McIntosh, Keith Robinson, Fred “Boomer” Langlotz and Rick Astley were our reps. Maurice Kolff’s foursome notched the only victory, although our other teams had close matches. As usual, the visit was a pleasant one, renewing old friendships and meeting new people. Many of the curlers will meet again in future competitions.

This week we have a few matches, one of which is the senior men’s Prescott Parnell competition on Friday. We’ll have those results next week.

Finally, we bid a sad farewell to Bob Youmelle, senior men’s curler at the club, who passed away last week. His self-deprecating humour endeared him to those with whom he curled. Bob’s long battle with cancer finally took him, and those who knew him miss him dearly.
