Competitions with other clubs continue, with the first one last week being the bonspiel in Lancaster. Alice Thompson, Joan MacKinnon, Janie Connelly, and Nelda Hickman played a team from Vankleek Hill in a seesaw battle but lost on the last rock. In the second match a strong foursome from Prescott won. A good day anyway, ladies.

On Wednesday three teams from Russell came to Morrisburg for a friendly bonspiel. Our Thursday morning curlers were the hosts, and a team from Russell fared badly on the previous day at the Lancaster bonspiel, so they were looking for revenge. Unfortunately, Russell had a rough time at our club also, as two of our teams defeated them (in a friendly manner.) Len Bellamy, Alice Thompson, Denis Thibault and Janie Connelly, as well as Susan McIntosh, Keith Robinson, Linda Murphy and Lise Steinburg won their matches, while our third team, Andy Patenaude, Joanne Baker, John Gove and Nelda Hickman were kinder to our guests. A delicious lunch followed, and the Russell folks thanked our curlers for a pleasant day, assuring them things would be different when Morrisbug came to Russell in January.

We had a menā€™s team from Morrisburg at a seniors bonspiel in Winchester. Jack Barkley, Doug Jarvis, Rick MacKenzie and Ron Brinston won their first game easily over a Winchester quartet, but had a tight match against Cumberland. Our fellows finished third in the tournament, and we congratulate them on their success. Last Saturday the Gamble was held here. The annual four-club, double team event, including Russell, Winchester and Metcalfe played morning and afternoon games. After the banquet two game winners and the afternoon single game winners competed for theā€œAā€ and ā€œBā€ championships. Our Morrisburg teams did not advance for the ā€œAā€ title, but John Toonders from Williamsburg, Susan McIntosh, Jeff Trumble and Gail Lafreniere were tied coming home against a good foursome from Winchester, butthey did not have last rock and lost the match. John had won on a previous occasion, so maybe heā€™ll repeat next year. Both of our teams curled well.

Special thanks to Susan, who started preparations for meals before 8:00 a.m. and filled in at third for Kathy Norg in the final. Also our thanks to President Mahlon who emceed, recorded results, took care of lounge requests and made the presentations to the winning teams. Congratulations to Russell, skipped by Bryan Cochrane. A strong Metcalfe foursome was down by two points coming home, but Bryan was able to limit them to one point to take the title. A great day.

On Friday the first Parnell competition of the season will be held here. As hosts, we are allowed only one representative, with Prescott, Cornwall and Lancaster rounding out the field. Good curling!
