On Saturday our club hosted a charity bonspiel sponsored by the Cornwall and District Alzheimer Society. The Society seeks to make people aware of dementia and encourages them to help those with this all-too-common disease to live well. They note ten of the warning signs for this insidious disease, including memory loss, disorientation in time and space, misplacing things, changes in personality, as well as loss of initiative.

All of the teams earned prizes, and played well in this worthy event. Our thanks to President Mahlon Locke, who was instrumental in making the bonspiel a success, in organizing, acting as an emcee on the day, and even playing on one of the teams. There were a few representatives from Cornwall competing, and several of their organizers were present as well. The society looked after a fine lunch, provided the prizes, and also arranged for a silent auction to add to the money earned. The competition was comprised of two six-end games, and there were some excellent matches, with many incredible shots. The overall winners on the day were the team of Wendy and Jim Casselman, Liz Locke and Darryl McDonnell, with the Lions team of Keith Robinson, Fred “Boomer” Langlotz, Paul Gunther and Dr. Wayne Domenko finishing a close second.

Our senior men hosted three teams from Brockville last Friday on the return visit for a friendly match. Peter Zeran, Paul Dobry, Ron Beaupre and Charlie Farlinger, as well as Raymond Benoit, Keith Robinson, Earl Jeacle and Ron Brinston won their games. John Allison, Sam Locke, Kent Dawley and Jim Adams were good hosts, allowing the visitors a narrow victory. Brockville enjoyed the lunch, the ice, and the company, and all present agreed the old club’s atmosphere, on balance, equated well with Brockville’s country club.

Greta McGann has a team in Ottawa’s Crystal Heart bonspiel this week, and we’ll have the results next time.

Congratulations to our two young bantam teams in their bonspiel last weekend. Ewan Wilson, Nolan Belanger, Josh Broad and Jodie Robinson defeated a Kemptville foursome 12-2. In their second game they struggled and dropped a tight one, losing 6-5 to Russell. Our second team of Abby Tritskzy, and Annika and Erin Gibbons lost close games to Russell 6-3 and to Kemptville 8-5. All of our curlers had fun, and gained valuable experience.

Our little rockers have a bonspiel this weekend in Winchester, and on Feb. 14 two teams will be in Morrisburg for the Little Big Four. There will also be two reps from each of Winchester, Metcalfe and Russell. Come over and cheer our folks on if you get a chance.

Finally, Susan McIntosh is having another two-person bonspiel this Sunday. Please sign up in the clubhouse if you are interested.
