Last Saturday our club hosted the annual four-club double-team women’s bonspiel, the Broder. Our local people took care of the meals, the ice, and the bar for the competition. Winchester was able to field only one team, so Russell placed a third foursome in the event under Winchester’s colours. In the opening match, Sue McIntosh, Kathy Norg, Gail Frenier and Claire Locke lost by a single point to a Metcalfe foursome. Our other team, Greta McGann, Joan McKinnon, Kathy Killick and Penny Charlebois defeated Winchester. After lunch, Greta’s team played the other Winchester quartet, winning again, qualifying for the “A” division match held after the evening banquet. Sue McIntosh played a second Metcalfe quartet and defeated them, also moving to the evening match in the “B” final.

After the evening meal and a brief meeting, our curlers took to the ice. Sue McIntosh, Kathy Norg, Gail Frenier and Claire Locke triumphed, with their opponents conceding the match after four ends. With the “B” championship plaque and pins, our team was deservedly proud, as are we. In the long history of the competition, this is the fifth win for a Morrisburg team.

In the “A” final, Greta, Joan, Kathy and Penny battled hard but lost to Winchester, who will keep the trophy for another year.

On Sunday our Morrisburg Lions club hosted a charity bonspiel. They were able to present a goodly number of items for a silent auction, and with the money realized for that, as well as the entry fees, they were able to turn over considerable funds to the local charity that they had selected. Lions from Morrisburg, Iroquois and Chesterville entered teams, as did the Williamsburg Oddfellows, while a number of local curlers filled in the remaining spots. With the combination of experienced curlers and public-spirited club members, there were some excellent shots and numerous entertaining plays. After the two six-end games for each team, the overall winner on the day was a quartet who dubbed themselves “The Misfits”. Congratulations to the champions, Raymond Benoit, Dave King, Jacques Marquis and Rod Bartlett. Special thanks to Keith Robinson and his committee for looking after the event.

Greta McGann, Joan McKinnon, Kathy Killick and Penny Charlebois curled at the Granite club last week, and came home with the overall championship. They defeated a Cornwall foursome in the morning and a Carleton Heights team in the afternoon.

Three of our teams of daytime curlers were in Russell last week for a friendly bonspiel. The roads were snow-covered that day, but they made it there safely and enjoyed a very good lunch. They even liked the curling, though they lost their matches, by single points. Dave King, Betty Locke, Denis Thibault and Linda Murphy, Andy Patenaude, Alice Thompson, Sharon VanAllen and Rick Astley, as well as Susan McIntosh, Rick MacKenzie, Jim Casselman and Janie Connelly were the players of record in a very enjoyable outing.

The senior men’s second draw, for the Kincaid Trophy, has finished, with Ray Benoit, Rick MacKenzie, Maurice Kolff and Kent Dawley the winners. Finishing a close second and third were the foursomes skipped by Peter Zeran and Andy Patenaude. Play has already begun on the next draw, for the Morrisburg Feed and Seed Trophy.

Several bonspiels are underway this week, and we’ll report on them next time. Good curling to all!
