Over the holidays, curlers enjoyed the New Year’s Eve party and on the first Sunday of the month, we were treated to another of Sue McIntosh’s successful two-person bonspiels. On New Year’s Eve, Susan McIntosh and Paula Locke won the two-person bonspiel. Susan wanted to thank the folks who kept Wally’s ice in good shape for her two person bonspiel, and for Subway’s delicious lunch with soup and subs. For the stats for the curious, and for the people who deserve public recognition, the “C” winners were Greta McGann and Linda Murphy, the “B” winners were John and Jason Toonders, and the overall champions for the day, in the “A” division match, were Rick McKenzie and Dave King. There were some great games as usual, and it was a fine way to start 2016.

There is a friendly bonspiel in Russell for the Thursday morning crew today, on Wednesday, January 13. Russell will make a return visit here on the morning of March 16th. Also, Russell is holding a seniors’ stick bonspiel in February.

Cornwall hosted the second Parnell competition for senior men last Friday, and for this one we were allowed two teams. Jack Barkley, Neil Williams, Doug Jarvis and Rick McKenzie played off against Don McMillan, Dave King, Moe Kolff, and Keith Robinson. Jack’s comeback fell just short, allowing the McMillan foursome to be one of the entries. The next day, Peter Zeran’s team, with Mahlon and Sam Locke and Bud Perry, had to fend off Jack’s foursome, with Dave King replacing Neil. As had been the case the previous day, it was a very tight match, but Pete’s fellows held on for the win. On Friday our men were in Cornwall for the main competition. Don McMillan, Alan Harriman, Maurice Kolff and Keith Robinson defeated Lancaster in their first match. In the afternoon, Don’s team lost a tight game to Prescott. Peter Zeran, Mahlon and Sam Locke and Bud Perry defeated a Cornwall foursome in the morning, and in the afternoon they continued their dominance, defeating a Lancaster representative. Peter’s boys won by just one point, but it was enough to bring the Parnell trophy back to Morrisburg, where it originated many years ago. Well done fellows!

Our younger curlers will be busy this month. Mahlon Locke and others were in Prescott with them last weekend. Our curlers played two six end games against Prescott foursomes. They dropped the first 4-3, but won the second 8-0. President Mahlon says the curlers did our club proud, and they were Rhiannon Beckstead, Alexix Grenkie-Brooks, Debbie Milewski and Hanna Gibbons. Great work!

Morrisburg will host Russell this Saturday for the annual Broder competition. Two teams each from Russell, Metcalfe and Winchester will challenge our two representatives, skipped by Sue McIntosh and Greta McGann. As usual, the top four teams will play off after the evening banquet to decide “A” and “B” titles.

We had some great men’s and women’s curling on TSN over the weekend, and next week there’s more in Las Vegas, as our best men’s and women’s teams and the top teams from across the Atlantic do battle.

Finally, on Sunday, January 17th, the Morrisburg Legion is hosting a Hospice Bonspiel here. Our local Legion is are entering two teams, as are the Iroquois Legion and our local Oddfellows. The other teams so far are local ones. Two six-end matches are planned and there will also be a silent auction. The day is for a good cause, and we look forward to some good curling as well. There are still openings for three additional teams.

Good curling to all!
